IELTS Writing Task 2 – Discussion Essay: Education

Practise writing a balanced discussion essay that explores both sides of an issue and ends with your own well-supported opinion.

What is a Discussion Essay?

A discussion essay asks you to present both sides of an argument before giving your own opinion. You must give equal weight to each perspective before concluding with a supported position. This type is sometimes called "Discuss both views and give your opinion."

Intro
Introduce the topic and briefly state that there are two views. End with a sentence indicating which view you support.
Body 1
Present the first view (often the one you disagree with) with reasons and examples.
Body 2
Present the second view (usually the one you support) with stronger evidence and more detail.
Avoid
Do not treat this as an opinion essay — you must present both views. Do not omit your own position at the end.

Writing structure

Paragraph 1: Introduction — outline both views + state your own position.
Paragraph 2: Body 1 — first view, reasons, and examples.
Paragraph 3: Body 2 — second (opposing) view, stronger evidence, your preference.
Paragraph 4: Conclusion — summarise both sides, clearly restate your opinion.
Key phrases: Those who support… argue that… / On the other hand, others believe… / From my perspective… / Both views have merit, however… / It can be argued that…

Guided example

Example question: Some people believe students should be taught in mixed-ability classes, while others think they should be grouped by ability. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Model structure

Introduction: The question of whether students learn best in mixed-ability or ability-grouped classes is widely debated. Whilst grouping by ability has its advantages, I believe mixed-ability classes better prepare students for real-world challenges.

Body 1: Supporters of ability grouping argue it allows teachers to pitch lessons at the right level. Advanced students are not held back, and weaker students receive more targeted support. This can boost both confidence and academic results in the short term.

Body 2: However, mixed-ability classes offer significant social and academic benefits. Students learn from each other's strengths, develop empathy, and build communication skills that are essential beyond school. Research suggests that peer learning in diverse groups leads to deeper understanding, not merely surface performance.

Conclusion: Although ability grouping may raise test scores, I believe that mixed-ability classes create more rounded, adaptable learners. Education should prepare students for a diverse society, not merely an examination hall.

Practice Discussion Essay

Task: Some people believe that universities should focus mainly on academic subjects, while others think that universities should also prepare students for practical life skills. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
