How Vocabulary Is Taught

Vocabulary follows a full, structured progression with two dedicated memory phases between Apply and Test: Retrieve and Space. This combines active recall and spaced repetition to move words into long-term memory. The MOCK phase is not used for Vocabulary.

The AI introduces each new word in rich, meaningful context — not just a dictionary definition. Students encounter the word in example sentences, see how it collocates with other words, learn its register (formal or informal), and explore related forms such as noun, verb, adjective, and adverb. The AI adapts the complexity of its explanations to the learner's current level, pausing to answer questions and offering additional examples whenever a student needs clarification. This phase ensures that words are understood deeply before any practice begins.

Students actively use the words they have just learned through a varied set of AI-guided exercises — gap-fill sentences, word-form selection, synonym matching, and sentence completion tasks. After every response, the AI provides immediate, explanatory feedback: it does not simply mark an answer right or wrong but explains why, shows the correct usage in context, and offers a follow-up example. This corrective loop trains accurate word use and helps students internalise meaning, spelling, and grammar patterns simultaneously.

Retrieve
Retrieval practice is one of the most powerful memory techniques in cognitive science. In this phase, students are challenged to recall each word without any context clues, hints, or example sentences — pure active recall. The AI monitors every attempt and builds a personal difficulty profile for each learner: words that are recalled quickly are scheduled less frequently, while words that are missed or hesitated over are surfaced again and again until they are recalled reliably. This deliberate struggle strengthens the neural pathways that make words truly memorable.

Spaced repetition works by reviewing information at precisely the right moment — just before the memory fades. The AI calculates an individual review schedule for every word in a student's vocabulary list, based on that student's unique recall history from the Retrieve phase. Words that were recalled easily are reviewed after longer intervals; words that proved difficult are reviewed sooner. Over time, successful reviews push the interval further and further apart, moving words from short-term into genuine long-term memory while minimising the total study time required.

The final vocabulary phase is a timed, fully independent assessment conducted without AI assistance, hints, or feedback during the session. Students complete a structured test that covers all target words from the unit — testing meaning, usage, word form, and collocation across a variety of question types. The test produces an objective score that accurately reflects how well the student has learned and retained the vocabulary. Results are used by the teacher to identify any remaining gaps and to plan targeted follow-up review before the next unit begins.
