The past simple talks about finished actions in the past. We use past verb forms like played, went, ate, and saw.

I played.
She went.
We did not go.
Did Ali arrive?
They ate lunch.
What does it mean?

Finished action in the past.

I played yesterday.The action is finished.Yesterday is in the past.
She went home.The action happened before now.Went is the past of go.
They visited Dubai last year.The time is finished.Last year is past time.
Main rule

Use the past form in positive sentences.

Affirmative form

Subject + past verb.

I watched TV.Regular past verb: watched.I + past verb

Negative form

Use did not + base verb.

I did not play.Short form: I didn't play.Use base verb after didn't.
She did not go.Short form: She didn't go.Not: didn't went.

Question form

Use Did + subject + base verb?

Did you play?Did + subject + base verb.Not: Did you played?
Did she go?Use go after did.Not: Did she went?

Short answers

Answer with did or didn't.

Regular verbs

Regular past verbs usually add ed.

Just add edplay -> played

Double letters

Some short verbs double the last letter.

Some verbs have special past forms.
