IELTS Writing Task 2 – Opinion Essay: Technology

Practise writing an opinion (agree/disagree) essay by stating a clear position, supporting it with reasons and examples, and acknowledging a counter-argument.

What is an Opinion Essay?

In an IELTS Task 2 opinion essay you are asked to give your view on a statement. You must take a clear position (agree or disagree, or partially agree) and support it throughout. The examiner looks for a consistent, well-argued stance.

Intro
Paraphrase the question and state your position clearly in the final sentence of the introduction.
Body 1
State your main reason, explain it, and give a concrete example or evidence.
Body 2
Give a second reason or acknowledge the opposing view and refute it.
Avoid
Do not change your position in the conclusion. Do not write both sides equally — this is an opinion essay.

Guided example

Example question: Some people believe that technology has made people less social. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Model structure

Introduction: Advances in technology have transformed how people communicate, leading some to argue that this has reduced face-to-face interaction. While I acknowledge this concern, I firmly believe that technology has, on balance, made people more connected rather than less social.

Body 1: Firstly, digital platforms enable people to maintain relationships across great distances. For instance, messaging applications such as WhatsApp allow family members living in different countries to communicate daily. Without technology, these connections would be severely limited by cost and geography.

Body 2: Admittedly, excessive screen time can reduce in-person interaction. However, this is a problem of individual behaviour rather than technology itself. Many communities use social media to organise events and build local connections, demonstrating that technology can actively foster socialisation when used responsibly.

Conclusion: In conclusion, while technology carries the risk of social isolation if misused, I believe it fundamentally enhances human connection. The responsibility lies with users to maintain a healthy balance.
