IELTS Writing Task 2 – Double Question Essay: Health

Practise answering two distinct questions in a single essay, ensuring each question receives a full, clearly signposted answer.

What is a Double Question Essay?

A double question (or "direct question") essay presents a situation and then asks two separate questions — for example, "Why is this happening?" and "What can be done about it?" You must answer both questions fully and in a balanced way. Ignoring one question will severely reduce your Task Achievement score.

Body 2

Guided example

Example question: In many countries, people are becoming increasingly overweight. Why is this happening? What measures could be taken to address this problem?

Model structure

Introduction: Rising rates of obesity have become a serious public health concern across the globe. This essay will examine the primary reasons behind this trend and suggest practical measures to reverse it.

Body 1 (Why is this happening?): The main driver of obesity is the widespread availability of cheap, calorie-dense processed food. Marketing by fast-food companies targets children from an early age, shaping unhealthy dietary habits. In addition, increasingly sedentary lifestyles — driven by desk-based work and the popularity of screen entertainment — mean that people are burning far fewer calories than previous generations.

Body 2 (What measures can be taken?): Governments could impose a tax on ultra-processed foods and sugary drinks, making healthier options relatively more affordable. Schools should also ensure that physical education is compulsory and that healthy meals are the norm in canteens. At the individual level, greater awareness of nutritional information — supported by clear food labelling — can empower consumers to make better daily choices.

Conclusion: In summary, rising obesity stems primarily from poor diet and inactivity. A combination of government regulation, school programmes, and greater individual awareness can collectively address this growing health crisis.
